Roy was born in Cookstown, Queensland where he worked as a stockman but he was also the brother of Mrs J Cassidy, Auburn.Private Hutson joined the 4 battalion, 12 reinforcements, force on 14 August, 1915 and sailed for the front  in July 1916.
 
He was wounded for the first time with a severe gundshot wound to the left arm around 22 July 1917 and rejoined his unit month later. He was then wounded a second time in France this time with a gunshot wound to the thigh on 18 May 1917. Amazingly he was wounded a third time only one month after rejoining his unit 25 September 1917 and returned to Australia, December 1917. He was the son of Colonel Hutson, who fought in British East Africa.
