When Robert Jackson enlisted on 12 September 1916 was a 23 year old assayer living with his father, W.G.Jackson at “Rutland”, Windsor Rd, Northmead. He embarked 8 November, 1916 from Sydney on the Port Nicholson. He served in France in 2 Infantry Battalion and 13-23 Reinforcements and his service number was 6764. He was wounded twice in France, once on 22 September 1917  with a shrapnel wound to the face and then on 29 June 1918 which led to his right foot being amputated.
