Private William Hawkey enlisted on 28 June 1915.

He was a 22 year old, police constable. He was living in Campbell’s Hill, Merrylands, with his wife Mrs Chrissie Winfred Hawkey. He married Chrissie on Saturday 14 August 1915 before embarking for war. He was a member of the Church of England. He served as part of the 30 Infantry Battalion. He embarked with his unit aboard HMAT Beltana A72 from Sydney on 9 November 1915. He was wounded in action in France, and suffered gunshot wounds to his hands and fingers.
