Private William Arthur Head enlisted 17 August 1914.

He was a 25 year old single man working as a hospital attendant in a North Parramatta hospital. He was born in Bristol, England, and was part of the Church of England. His mother, Charlotte Head, died after he went to war and his father was already deceased. He had an older brother called Harry living in Cape Town, South Africa, another brother called Alan in Canterbury, New South Wales, and a sister in Bristol, England. His brother Alan served as a soldier in the 17 Battalion for four years. He served as part of the 4 Australian Infantry Battalion. He embarked upon the HMAT Euripides A14 from Sydney on 20 October 1914. He was killed in action in Gallipoli, Dardanelles, Turkey, on 3 May 1915. He was buried at the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey. His name is located on the Roll of Honour at the Australian War Memorial at number 40 in the Commemorative Area.
